Solentiname Islands as part of your visit to river San Juan and Lake Nicaragua
Solentiname continues to be involved in a mysterious blend of charm, peacefulness and beauty. Those who have visited really feel in the middle of the immensity of Lake Nicaragua. This is why if you have time in your visit to river San Juan and Indio Maiz biosphere reserve, you could also plan to visit the archipelago.
We at Guacimo Lodge have been supporting those guests that wanted to know Solentiname. We recommend doing this as part of your return journey after departing Guacimo.
This is an example of how the itinerary would work: from El Castillo you have daily public boats departing to San Carlos at 05am, 05.15am, 07am, 09am, 11am and 2pm. You may get in any of them (we recommend the 7am fast boat!). Please note Guacimo Lodge takes you in our private boat to El Castillo dock (15 min boat transfer) free of cost and will also support in reserving your boat tickets in advance (cost of boat tickets: $4 per person)
Once in San Carlos, we will have coordinated for you a private boat transfer to the Archipelago Solentiname. To navigate through Lake Nicaragua is an experience by itself. Calculate 1hr boat trip to San Fernando Island passing through the small island of “El Zapote” or commonly called “Bird island”.
Usually we recommend morning time to travel in boat through Lake Nicaragua and going east to west because the ride will go with the wind, not against usual wind currents going the opposite way😊!
After lunch, you have a free afternoon to visit Mancarron island where you can see primitivist painting artisans working outside their homes as well as the church of Ernesto Cardenal. You could also visit isla La Venada to see the ancient petroglyphs or prehistoric rock carvings that reveal the presence of early indigenous communities that lived in the archipelago and Lake Nicaragua centuries ago.
In San Fernando Island itself do not forget to just wonder around and take a small walk in its shores before sunset.
Next morning after breakfast, your boat awaits for you to take you to the small port of Colón in the south of Lake Nicaragua, from where Guacimo Lodge has organized your further journey according to your next destination, be it San Juan del Sur area, Solentiname Islands (port of San Jorge), Granada, Managua or any other within Nicaragua.

Chose our Guacimo Lodge 3 or 4 night adventure packages to live your jungle experience close to Indio Maiz reserve and combine it with an exotic return by boat through Lake Nicaragua with a special stop in Solentiname Island!
