Day to day Itinerary

Arriving to Guacimo Lodge

You will be picked up in El Castillo dock by a Guacimo Lodge representative at the scheduled time for a short, 15 min river-ride trip to our lodge. Guacimo Lodge is only accessible by water, and is located by Indio Maiz Biosphere Reserve. After the sunset, you’ll enjoy a Night Tour on our private boat, where you will sight basilisks, owls or caimans in the San Juan river.

During your stay at Guacimo Lodge

You’ll awake each morning with the sounds of the native birds of the reserve and the river. Then head over to our Rancho Grande for a delicious Nica breakfast made of tropical fruits, eggs, tortillas and gallo pinto or choose from our continental breakfast options of yogurt, cereal and pancakes, all with Nicaraguan blended coffee.

You may start with a hike through the tropical forest with a bilingual guide. Indio Maiz reserve is home to a large number of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. While walking nearby tropical water channels, you can take an active role in our quest to identify species – some of them still unrecorded – inhabiting the primary forest!

You can follow by visiting the small town of El Castillo and its legendary XVII century forest used to contain pirates coming from the Caribbean coast. El Castillo is a town with no cars, living out of fishing, small trading and artisan work. You will see how its small cocoa cooperative works and taste a just-made chocolate.

During your stay, you will enjoy kayaking through the tranquil waters of the Bartola river at the entrance of Indio Maiz Biosphere Reserve while observing the density of wildlife and the locals going with their cayucos to their communities.

Departing from Guacimo Lodge

After your breakfast you will be taken in a 15 min river-ride trip by private boat to El Castillo main dock where a Guacimo Lodge representative will support you to continue your itinerary, be it by private or public boat to San Carlos or to Santa Fe if you continue your trip Costa Rica.
