Nicaraguan wildlife in river San Juan and Indio Maiz reserve

Ríver San Juan and Indio Maiz have always fascinated the visitor. These are some views recently taken by our guests while walking through the forest or close to the banks of the river San Juan.

Scarleth Macaws and Great Green Macaws visit us frequently at Guacimo Lodge. Sometimes just stopping by in their way to the  tropical humid forest located close to us and sometimes taking their time eating the fruit of the almond trees that grow close to our bungalows. They love the “almendra” and both the smaller Nicaraguan almond tree as well as the greater almond tree provide this fruit that is critical to their diet and habitat. Whenever you see one free Ara Macao close to you, you don´t forget its exuberant colours or the loud sounds when flying above.

When canoeing through the San Juan river in direction to Indio Maiz reserve, or during the river night tours, you may also spot cocodriles and caimans. Generally they are shy and you will see them sunbathing or awaiting quietly their next pray. The more you get close to Indio Maiz reserve, the more chances you will have to see one of them!

Spider and howler monkeys are all around Guacimo Lodge. Group of spider monkeys may observe you from the “Almendro” and Cedar trees inside the forest. Howler monkeys are more visible in the shores of the San Juan river. You will hear their loud and characteristic sound early morning and during the sunset.

While hiking through our “Zompopo” or “Ceiba” trails, you may spot the small poison dart frogs like the Blue Jeans or the Green and Black. They usually are close to the base of trees in the rainforest floor. Our guides are quite good at finding them behind fallen leaves and close to tropical water channels.

The above are just some of the species you may spot during Guacimo Lodge wildlife tours. Of course luck also counts, but you have a great chance of seeing some of them – and others – during your stay.

Please ask us on duration, level of difficulty and any other wildlife tour characteristic. We will be glad to inform. You can contact us under contact@guacimolodge.com or whatsapp us at +505 8239 9716

Hasta pronto!
