Guacimo Lodge San Juan river Nicaragua featured in National Geographic Latin America
We are proud Guacimo Lodge has been featured in National Geographic Traveller UK in its 2026/27 Latin America Collection, released this month of August, as a representative property of Nicaragua.
National Geographic highlights Guacimo Lodge location nestled along the majestic San Juan River and the Indio Maíz Reserve in one of the most biodiverse regions in Nicaragua. It highlights the opportunity to discover a lesser-known side of Nicaragua: its remote Atlantic lowlands, where tropical forest, rivers and extraordinary wildlife meet.
Below an excerpt of it!
“Nicaragua, land of Lakes & Volcanoes, but also land of lowland tropical forests. Located in between Indio Maiz – one of the largest protected lowland forest system in Central America – and lake Cocibolca, the world’s only freshwater lake to house oceanic life, Guacimo Lodge is truly a window into Atlantic Nicaragua. Discover raw nature, but also the great character of Nicaraguan people and the history that makes this country unique.

Local expert guides will canoe you down the San Juan River to the Indio Maíz reserve for a hike through the forest, continuing through the quiet waters of the small Bartola River to observe wildlife along its banks. They can also lead you through the primary forest along our Zompopo or Ceiba trails, where you can walk past small jungle water channels and giant Almendro or Cedro trees. On a day tour, you can reach the Solentiname Archipelago in the southeast of Lake Cocibolca (also known as Lake Nicaragua) to pass by Bird’s Island or enjoy its unique sunsets. Only a few minutes upriver lies the small river town of El Castillo, home to a 17th-century colonial fortress that stands as a witness to the grand history of the San Juan River.
Guacimo Lodge provides complete logistical support, ranging from private land transportation to boat transfers across the San Juan River or Lake Nicaragua. Whether arriving from Costa Rica or any city within Nicaragua, your trip to Indio Maíz will seamlessly combine a touch of comfort with the spirit of adventure.
